About the project

Becket's Chapel in the centre of Wymondham, Norfolk is a Grade I listed building and a rare survival of a medieval independent chantry chapel, with the earliest parts dating from the 12th century. After years on Historic England's Heritage at Risk Register it was purchased in 2022 by Historic Norfolk (formerly the Norfolk Historic Buildings Trust), which carried out a programme of restoration and repair.

The next phase of the project, granted planning permission and listed building consent in October 2024, will add a sensitively designed extension with a kitchen and cafe, an accessible toilet and a visitor information point, helping the chapel thrive as a community and arts venue.

The consultancy's role

Alix Slater Consultancy & Training prepared an Expression of Interest and worked in collaboration with the Trust to apply for a major grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
