About the project

Eastbridge Hospital of St Thomas the Martyr was founded around 1190 to provide shelter for poor pilgrims travelling to the shrine of Thomas Becket in Canterbury Cathedral. More than eight centuries later, the Grade I listed building on Canterbury's High Street still fulfils its charitable purpose as an almshouse for elderly residents of the city, alongside welcoming visitors to its medieval undercroft and chapels.

The historic buildings on the site have significant repair needs. The Trustees were also exploring improved access, the visitor route, interpretation and an ambitious programme of engagement activities.

The consultancy's role

Alix Slater Consultancy & Training provided project development support and advice on funding, and prepared an Expression of Interest that was accepted for a major grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
