About the project

Lincolnshire County Council wanted a study of the value of heritage and the historic environment in the county: mapping heritage assets and activities across Lincolnshire, reviewing secondary sources of the economic and social value of heritage, and planning and conducting primary research to fill in potential data gaps.

The consultancy's role

Alix Slater Consultancy & Training was commissioned to research and write the original report. The work reviewed extant literature on the value of heritage and Lincolnshire tourism data, and built a database of the county's heritage assets, museums, collections, archives, historic buildings and landscapes, parks and gardens, trails and heritage events. It also included an audit of heritage volunteering groups and heritage-skills programmes, a survey of heritage organisations to build mini case studies, and a survey of Lincolnshire residents using questions benchmarked against national data.

The Council published the report in 2025. Further case studies were added after the consultancy's original research.
