From the great palm houses of Kew and Belfast to the working glasshouses of walled kitchen gardens, Britain's glasshouses record two centuries of ambition: iron and timber engineering at its most daring, and horticulture at its most globally curious. Many are now in trouble - expensive to heat, fragile to maintain, and orphaned from the estates and industries that built them.
A glasshouse is a peculiarly demanding heritage asset. It is a building that must also perform as a machine: light, humidity and temperature are part of its significance, not incidental to it. Restore the fabric without restoring the growing, and you have conserved a greenhouse-shaped sculpture.
Fabric and function together
The successful projects treat conservation and horticulture as one brief. That has consequences for funding applications - activity plans built around growing, training and food; for business plans - venues, cafés and plant sales that trade on the building's atmosphere; and for interpretation, where the story of what was grown is as compelling as the story of what was built.
A glasshouse is a building that must also perform as a machine - restore one without the other and you conserve a sculpture.
Climate adds urgency in both directions. Historic glasshouses are energy-hungry, and decarbonising them without harming their character is a live conservation debate. At the same time, they are ready-made venues for exactly the conversations about growing, food and climate that audiences now want to have.
